The Usual Montauk

While at the Venice Lightning Bolt store, we stumbled upon this really well designed local paper out of Montauk, NY.  The Usual is a seasonal “love letter to Montauk,” focusing on the people and places that make the easternmost tip of Long Island so special. Issues 1 and 2, printed on newsprint, tell the story of summer 2011 with photo essays by Ben Watts and Purple Magazine’s Rachel Chandler that include interviews with designers Cynthia Rowley and Rogan, wave riding pioneer Tom Curren, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith, “gonzo” surf legend/memoirist Allan Weisbecker, daughter of music royalty Savannah Buffett, playwright Edward Albee and bands the Cults and The Postelles. Additional contributions include Bethany Mayer, Jimmy “Is My Board Done Yet?” Goldberg, Joni Sternbach, David Matterhorn, Ken Miller, Seth Herzog, Jim Lee, Phil Winser and Ben Towill of Fat Radish, Will Adler, Glenn Glasser, Joe Curren and Hannibal Buress.

Produced by a two woman creative team: Yasha Wallin (editor) and Emily Anderson (creative director), we combined our love for surfing, the outdoors and the Montauk community to create a collectible publication that would reflect this spirit.
